GBC | WISP- 30th September 2020

5 Oct

Hi All,

I`m writing this from Nelson where seven GBC sailors were competing in the 2020 Starling Nationals. It was a windy and cold one but the Nelson race management team did a great job and managed to get the full quota of 8 races in over 4 days. With gusts over 30 knots and steady wind conditions for races over the first 3 days in the 20 knot range the sailors had to work very hard and there was plenty of spills. There is some good footage here, you may recognise the voice providing the commentary. Also more photos on our facebook page of well rugged up sailors in action.

Jack Manning headed up the GBC sailors with a strong second half of the regatta to finish in 7th and William Beauchamp also finished strongly to take 15th. Well done to Rory Sims, Aiden Beauchamp, Zoe Mains, Oliver Davidson and Ben Brewer for a really top effor all of whom were competing in their first and what will have to be the toughest Starling Nationals for some time.

Opening day is not far off on Sunday 11th October. For our Upskillers and Learn to Sail teams this is a non sailing day but please do come down as we will be having an orientation and season preparation session be valuable and hopefully fun followed by a BBQ. Bring a spray jacket as we may get you out on a club RIB. For our race fleets there are trophies up for grabs. Its an 11am meet for everyone.

We have a few slots left for our Holiday Introduction to Sail day but if you know of anyone keen they will need to get in quick. The long range forecast for that week looks good so it should be a great week to get on the water and have some fun.

With a new season starting we need a new club cleaner. We are looking for someone who is doing Duke of Edinburgh and the needs the service hours. Its 1.5 hrs a week, nice environment and not too challenging! Please get in contact with Cath Costello at

Just a reminder to everyone to please get registered for the season as it helps us ensure we have the right coaching resources in place.

Hope the holidays are going well and look forward to seeing you in a couple of weeks.
