26 Nov

Hi Everyone,

There was plenty of wind about on Sunday so it was great that the Learn to Sail, Upskillers and Starling Greens managed to get some quality time on the water. There wouldn’t have been too many Auckland clubs that would have launched learning fleets on Sunday but the protection we get from the cliffs in a strong Westerly does come in handy from time to time. It’s good to build the sailors confidence in handling windier conditions – the key is often getting used to the extra noise from sails flapping loudly.

From what I hear, the sailors at GBC faired better than those who headed to Maratai. Unfortunately, the windy and very lumpy conditions meant that only one race was sailed. Well done to those who made the trip and stuck at it.

Thanks to those who have been into the club management platform to tidy up any outstanding fees and can I ask those that haven’t, to log in this week. Please email membersgbc@gmail.comor call David Davies on 021 922 102 if you need help or you have any questions or concerns.

Christmas gift ideas. A few weeks ago I mentioned the wide range of GBC branded clothing and accessories available at http://gbc.konstruct.com/ but for anyone looking for a gift that`s a bit different how about the biography: Des Townson, A sailing Legacy by Brian Peet – check out the attachment for details and how to order. For every copy sold through GBC, the club will receive a $20 donation.

The weekend after next is the Sir Peter Blake Regatta so race fleets will, once again, be on the road for this very large and very unique regatta hosted by Torbay Sailing Club. We will set up camp with Big Yellow, bring the bbq and generally make ourselves at home up there for the weekend. Entries close Tuesday 1st December and there is no late entry option this year.

It’s Spring Champs at GBC this weekend so there is silverware up for grabs. The tide will already be on the way out so we will need all the racing sailors rigged and ready for 8:30 briefing. For the avoidance of doubt, ready does mean changed in your sailing gear before briefing! Andy is RO for the day and will be looking to get racing away as soon as possible after briefing. For LTS and Upskillers it’s also an 8:30 meet.

See you on Sunday.

Roger
